The Pour-Over: Why You Should Stop Obsessing Over the Scale
The Pour-Over: Why You Should Stop Obsessing Over the Scale
EPISODE SUMMARY
For so many women, the number on the scale has become more than information. It can determine how they feel about their bodies, what they allow themselves to eat, whether they think they’re succeeding or failing, and even how confidently they show up in their lives. In this solo episode of LIMITLESS with Lina, Lina gets personal about her own complicated relationship with weight, from gaining 25 pounds her freshman year of college and experimenting with restrictive diets in New York City to allowing the scale to dictate her mood and self-worth as a young woman.
Nearly two decades into working in fitness, Lina sees the body very differently. She breaks down why scale weight is such an incomplete metric, especially for women, and the many factors that can cause weight to fluctuate without reflecting meaningful changes in body fat. More importantly, she shares the shift that changed the way she trains herself and coaches other women: instead of constantly asking what you need to lose, what do you want to gain? Strength, energy, muscle, confidence, resilience, vitality, freedom and a body that allows you to fully participate in your life.
WHAT YOU’LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE
- Why scale weight and body fat are not the same thing, and why the number on the scale can change even when you’re doing everything “right”
- How your menstrual cycle, hormones, strength training, carbohydrates, sodium, hydration, alcohol, stress, sleep and digestion can all influence scale weight
- How Lina’s own relationship with weight evolved from restriction, dieting and chasing a number to focusing on strength, capability and consistency
- Why changing the language you use about your body can change the way you experience movement and fitness
- The health and fitness markers that may tell you far more than your weight, including strength, energy, sleep, recovery, digestion, muscle, cardiovascular fitness and how you feel moving through your life
- Why wanting to look good, feel sexy and care about aesthetics can coexist with enjoying your life and respecting your body
ACTION STEPS & INVITATIONS
- Decide whether the scale is information or authority. If you can see the number, understand it in context and move on with your day, it may simply be another data point. But if it determines your mood, what you eat, how you exercise or how attractive you feel, experiment with putting it away for a week.
- Track what actually matters to you. Consider strength, energy, sleep, recovery, your cycle, digestion, consistency with movement, how your clothes fit, cardiovascular fitness or what your body is capable of doing.
- Flip the question. When you catch yourself focusing on what you want to lose or eliminate, ask: What do I want to gain? Strength? Confidence? Energy? Freedom around food? More capacity to adventure, play, work, travel and participate in your life?
- Get involved in your life. Train your body. Nourish her. Rest her. Challenge her. Dress her up. Take her to dinner. Let her dance, lift heavy things, experience pleasure, age and change. Take care of your body so you can use her to live.
